| Kadie |
We told our DRNA worker, Libby, that we were most interested in a "red boy". After almost two months of searching and waiting, we finally received a call from Libby to let us know she had a red male we may be interested in. We set up a time and drove up to meet "Mickey". He was absolutely handsome - so muscular and had a beautiful coat! However, Mickey didn't even warm up to us for almost an hour! He would run around the corner and bark, bark, bark at us! Libby had five or six fosters at the time, but he was the only red boy. Very shortly after we sat down on the couch, a black and tan female, Ginger Snap, ADOPTED us! (I loved her right away, probably because she loved us first!) She literally was all-over us! My husband couldn't decide hastily because in his heart he wanted a red boy so desperately! However, we discussed it and then waited on the call from Libby. She had decided to let another family adopt Mickey because they were within minutes and she felt they might need some help working with him. We picked Ginger up and she spent her first week with us at our little place at the beach. She was absolutely terrified of the beach then, but she loved us unconditionally! It was as if she had always been with us! We adopted her on April 12, 2004 and re-named her Kadie Elisabeth (after Libby).
Kadie knows many commands and tricks and is smart as a whip! Her favorite game is "Fetch" and she can even catch a pop-fly! Her favorite toy is a small, plush ball with a squeaky in it! She will sit, lay, stay, wait, dance, speak, shake, and even give free kissing lessons! Greenies are her absolute favorite treat, especially if she gets to go into Wags & Whiskers Pet Store to buy them. (In there, she gets to visit with a gorgeous, extra-furry, Himalayan named Sheldon!) She has three human teenage brothers - she can hardly wait to school is out and ball practice is over every day! She also has an iguana brother, Pedro - she will ask each day to visit with him! She loves Christmas morning and her birthday, and she will even open her own present as soon as she is told "okay"! I am a photographer and Kadie is my only full-time assistant. I strap my camera bag around my waist, and then leash her to it, and off we trot to take pictures of the baseball game! She is my (CRR) Customer Relations Representative and everyone LOVES her! Sheís a great "watchdog", as she will bark at ANY moving creature even attempting to enter our yard. Her post of duty when not assisting me with the photography business is perched high on the back of the couch, diligently monitoring any activity in or near our property! Kadie now loves being a "beach girl", too, as we have relocated to the coast! Kadie is a BEAUTIFUL, LOVING addition to our family! A special thank you to each of you who work so diligently for DRNA! May you be blessed! |

| Katie and Cookie |
This is the story of my two senior dachshunds, Katie and Cookie.
I adopted Katie, a red miniature, at the end of June, 2004. When I first saw her, Katie was staying at the home of a woman whose house I clean. She was rescued from abusive and neglectful owners, and was in pretty bad shape, having had surgery to remove bad teeth, and was on a special diet to help her gain weight. Katie was scrawny, scared, and her ears were hairless from poor health and bad circulation. Plus she had very bad breath from remaining decaying teeth and poor oral health. Yet, one day when I was over at my client's house and saw Katie in the yard, I sat on the steps to the back porch, and little Katie came up to me, went under my legs, and let me pet her. I fell in love with her right then and there. I knew I wanted to adopt her, regardless of her age (9 years at the time) and condition. This was a little dog begging for a loving home. I talked to my client, who agreed to let me take Katie as soon as I was settled in after my imminent move. I picked her up on June 26, 2004. Due to neglect and being in four unsuitable placement situations in three years, Katie had some behavioural issues and very poor housetraining. She urinated submissively often, and was very frightened of people and other dogs. However, in the year since I adopted her, Katie's health has improved dramatically. From the day I got her, I have given Katie daily doses of Tahitian Noni juice, which is known for its temendous health benefits. Katie grew fur on her ears again, and even went into heat! The latter was unexpected, and not necessarily healthy for a dog her age. In January of 2005, I took Katie to the vet to have necessary surgeries. She had five teeth extracted, the remaining ones cleaned, was spayed, had two hernias reduced, and had a small tumour removed from one of her breasts. Since then, Katie is in excellent health. Her true loving personality has come shining through. She is my little princess; she loves to sleep in her comfy bed, or cuddle with me on the couch. I can hardly imagine what my life was like before Katie came along! From the outset, I thought it might be a nice thing for Katie to have a companion. There certainly was room in my home for another wonderful dachshund, and knowing seniors are harder to place, I checked the listings on the Dachshund Rescue website for a dog in my area. I came upon Cookie on the site. Something about her photo - a beautiful dog with an inquisitive look about her - struck me. I couldn't imagine how, after 12 years, Cookie's owners could just give her up. I e-mailed an inquiry about Cookie, to find out if she was still available, and how much the fees would be to adopt her. I was contacted by a delightful woman named Michelle, who had Cookie at her home in Madison, which is an hour away from Milwaukee, where I live. After an in-home interview, it was determined my home would be a good fit for Cookie. I went to visit her. At first, she seemed somewhat disinterested in me, and I thought maybe she and I wouldn't click. But I put all my hesitations aside, and went ahead with the adoption proceedings. In February of 2005, I loaded Katie and a new, comfy bed into my car and headed to Madison to pick Cookie up. Cookie is a lovely, bright, happy dog. Her tail wags constantly, and she is very expressive, "talking" to me for about 10 minutes after I arrive home each day from work, scolding me for being away. When feeding time comes, Cookie waits and barks impatiently, telling me to hurry up and get her food mixed so she can devour it. Cookie loves her big bed and soft blanket as much as Katie loves her own, and they have become close companions. They sleep together under a blanket on my bed at night, and cuddle together when they are on the couch. It seems to me they talk to each other, as well. Cookie gets her daily dose of Noni along with Katie, to keep her healthy and give her longevity. Cookie loves to go on long walks, and though she had back surgery awhile before I adopted her to restore the use of her hind legs due to paralysis, she bounds up and down the stairs to my upper apartment with amazing energy. These two wonderful dogs have brought more joy and love to my life than I can express! I would never hesitate to adopt another senior dachshund! |

| Kona |
Hello:we adopted Lita on July 1, 2009. This is her "happy tail"... Hi, my name is Kona, formerly Lita. This name was given to me by my new parents. I am the rare "piebald" color in the picture. My pups and I had been abandoned by my previous owner. I am doing really well and have a big sister, Molly, to play with. I have adjusted quite well and love my new home. When I was first adopted, I was really scared and did not leave my mom's side. I eventually began to trust my dad and now we are the best of friends. Sometimes, I still have problems with strangers and like to bark at them. My parents are working with me on this, and I have gotten much better. My parents are the best. They even let me sleep in the "big bed" with them where I can take up all the room I want! My parents named me after one of their most favorite vacations spots, Kona Hawaii. They even bought me a Hawaiian collar. I am such a happy dog and cannot imagine life any better. Thanks for the new life DRNA! Keep finding homes for my little dachshund friends! Kona, Molly, Michelle, and Anthony |
