Hi!!! I'm Ginger, DRNA 6406, reporting in on my forever home.
I was adopted by Mom and Dad almost two months ago, and boy do I have them trained. (So much for the cliche that dogs have owners, cats have staff!!!) On the way home from my foster home, Mom fell for my big sad soulful eyes, so we of course had to stop for a snack!!!. I had hot dogs, my favorite!!!! I even had a special water container for the car. When we got home, I met the three cats, Max, Liffey and Bear. They soon learned who was boss!!! I usually don't chase them, but Liffey is so easy to fool into a chase around the apartment. (Liffey is the girl cat and Max and Bear are the boys). I have definitely hit the jackpot. I stay home with Mom all day, protecting her from the mailman and the UPS man. I spend a lot of time on the computer, typing and playing Webkinz. I have gotten very good at both. I also nap on Mom, when I am bored with the sofa. Mom and Dad are currently living near Albany, NY while Dad is training for his new job on the railroad with CSX. We will be moving sometime this spring or early summer, hopefully to the South. Mom feeds me twice a da y- once in the morning and then at night. I get some pumpkin with my food, and I share a water fountain with the cats. Max and I try each other's food to make sure that it is safe for the other to eat. I get Iams dental cookies and rawhides to chew every day. Mom takes me for walks when the weather is nice. (I really don't like the cold) I take Dad for walk when he gets home from work. When I was adopted, I came with a bankie, which I still use. I now have a sofa, a queen sized bed, and my own pillows and blankets!!!..I love the sofa - it is the perfect height for me. I have a set of stairs for the bed, and I sleep under the covers every night. A couple of weeks after I moved into my forever home, I met my grandparents and my Aunt Gingie, a long furred doxie. They live in New Jersey, so we went there for Easter weekend. I was good in the car- Mom and I sat in the backseat for a while, but Mom and Dad now know that I have to sit in the front - I can't see as much from the back. I have my own travel bag, food dishes, and pillow and bankie for the car. Grandma and Grandpa spoil me- they gave me new shirts to wear and took lots of pictures of me. I love having my picture taken. Aunt Gingie and I explored the backyard, and we get along great. We share everything except food. I actually have a vacation home!!!..How many dogs can say that!!!
Mom and Dad love it when I sit by myself. They are so easy to please. I kiss them for hours each day, and I go crazy over Dad when he gets home from work. I spend all night with him. (Mom has me all day, so that works out fine). I go to bed with them, and burrow under the covers. If I forget bankie, I go back to the sofa to get it. I use the stairs next to the bed all the time- Mom is worried that I could hurt my back.
I get treats once in a while, but do get nibbles from Mom at dinner. (She really can't resist me!!!) When they go car, I go with them. They rarely leave me behind. (The car is also mine, but don't tell them that!!!) Will report in after we move!!! |

Dear DRNA,
Just wanted to drop you a line to tell you that I am doing quite well. I have finally gotten my forever home family trained the way I like them. I now have my own queen size bed, which I generously share with Mom and Dad, I have a Toyota Rav4 in which I am chaufered about, for my subjects to adore me from a proper distance, and I have my own couch from which to watch tv, and on which I take long naps. (It is so difficult staying so beautiful, but I make the sacrifices necessary). I even have my own car blankets and pillows, as well as pillows for the couch. Mom bought me some more blankies, but I still prefer the one that came with me. My new one from IKEA is nice, and I love to roll up in it, when my other one is in the wash- It gets washed every week, so it doesn't smell bad for me. (Mom is convinced that I have a sensitive nose!!)
I am definitely a Daddy's Girl- I simply while away the daytime hours until he gets home from work, and then I take him on a walk. I still sleep on Mom and play on the computer with her- I really like Webkinz and wish that they would finally make a dachshund!!!! I have quite a wardrobe now, and I have a pink collar, pink harness and a pink leash, to go with it. (Pink is my signature color). All of the dogs in the neighborhood know that I am in charge here. The kids love me, and always want to pet me. I am busy protecting Mom from the nefarious mailman and UPS man. ![]() We are now down to two cats- my friend Max died a few weeks ago and Mom was very upset. He was almost 19 years old, and I took care of him when he started to get sick. I still chase Liffey, the girl cat around, but Bear, the other boy, and I are great friends- he is always sneaking out when I have to go outside. When Mom is feeling better, we go for long walks around the neighborhood, so I can visit all of my favorite smells. The other dogs know to stay away from me, too. Dad and I walk almost every night. I have done a lot of traveling lately. I even have my own cooler for my food and treats, and my own suitcase for my clothing and bankies. and my pillows come along. (Dad leaves one in the car at all times, since I never know when the next adventure will happen!!!!)We went on vacation to New Jersey, so I could see my grandparents, the week after Memorial Day. I had a blast- their house is huge, and has a great backyard, but the above ground pool isn't open yet. I got to play with my aunt Gingie, a long furred doxie, and we guarded the house while everyone went to Strasburg to ride the steam locomotives. Then, the following weekend, I went to Boston, and am going to be in a movie!!!. Dad's company sponsored a charity event, and we went to work on it. We painted score boards for the baseball field. I of course supervised, and had my first night in a hotel and rode a bus for the first time. Then I was in a video that the company was making, with my Dad- I was the belle of the ball, and my stage name is Ginger De Mille. I was very good- I really enjoyed having my picture recorded for posterity, expecially the closeups!!! I was very popular Mom and Dad have finally figured out that I do like canned food mixed in with my dry- it only took five different types of dry for them to do so, but I am content. I also get dog vitamins, so I am extra healthy. I prefer Wendy's to McDonalds, and like pizza crust and vanilla ice cream. I don't like fish, though, but I am very well behaved at meal time. I still get fed twice a day, and my treats are very limited, because I sometimes get a taste of what is called "people food". I don't know what that is, but it tastes better than what I get in my bowl!!! I do share my bowl with the cats, and sample theirs, so make sure that is is safe for them to eat. I also help Mom make Dad's dinner. I love raw carrots and cucumber!!! Mom broke her ankle two weeks ago, while we were out walking. I stayed with her until someone came to help her home, and until Dad got home and the ambulance arrived to take her to the hospital. Dad and Mom told me that I was a very brave dog, and that they were very proud of me for taking charge of Mom when she got hurt. (No, she didn't trip over me or my leash- her foot found a previously undiscovered hole on our morning walk.) She has a pretty pink cast, and goes to the doctor once a week, so I am in charge of the house while she and Dad are gone. Mom and Dad are very proud of me for my help with Mom- I even help her walk on her crutches- she looks so funny. We get lots of snuggle time too- I sleep on her lap of on her shoulder, until Dad gets home from work. Someone has to take away the pain from a broken ankle, and Dad says that no one can do it better. Mom and Dad even got me pink sunglasses called Doggles to thank me for my special help. I have visited the Blessed Kateri shrine in Fonda twice, and Dad blessed me with some holy water- I really love going there- I love running up the hill to the well. Mom can't keep up with us, but she tries. (We have to slow down for her) I just wanted you to know that I am safe, loved, and content. Thank you for taking care of me. I am also sending some pictures of me from the Boston movie location and from home. Agnes B. Bullock |

| Gracie and Layla |
![]() ![]() I guess you can start my story out with my rescue Layla from the West Virginia puppy mill. She's a wild child! Anyway, I didn't plan on getting another dachshund until DRNA rep, Veronica emailed me with a picture of the most darling adorable tiny little girl dachshund. She was rescued from a mill in southern Indiana and they were keeping her to breed her, even though she is a tiny little girl. I fell in love with her and her pretty hazel eyes so I met Veronica to get Gracie. When we got home, she got loose and hid under a car for nearly 3 hours. We finally got her inside and she hid under the computer desk for nearly 5 days. We had to give her food and water under there because she wouldn't come out. Eventually, she got some courage and came out to meet us. Now, she is the sweetest little girl ever. She loves laps and giving kisses and ear rubs. She's such a mama's girl and follows me everywhere in the house. When she gets excited, she "smiles" at you, and it melts your heart. She bares her teeth but not in an aggressive way, she's actually smiling. She loves food and toys. She does not enjoy going outside but will if she has to potty. Gracie also loves her big (younger) sister Layla and often sleeps on top of her. Gracie also enjoys running laps around our home and she gets so excited that she starts this grumbly growl/bark while running her laps. She is very thankful for beds, pillows and blankets, and is an excellent burrower. Again, I thank DRNA for all that you do for the dachshund breed. You are all angels and I am blessed to have adopted two dachshunds from DRNA. |

| Gretchen |
I want to sincerely thank you for the work of Patti Phillips. We adopted Gretchen, whose name is now Dixie from N.C to the upper penisula of Michigan.
We have two border collies and thought Gretchen would fit right in being part border collie. She's doing just great and we all just love her. She is a sweetheart just like Patti said and has learned just about everything we expected out of her already. Once she learned her name and "No" it was much easier.
I only hope she knows that this will be her last home and how much we appreciate her lovingness. She really found a good family!

| Gretal |
Our family was destined to adopt 'Gretal'. We watched the DRNA website, and others, to find just the right dog. We watched for months. A few dogs were of interest, but they were usually adopted before we could move on them. We had a long list of preferences for a dog, and DRNA fulfilled every one of them, and them some, in finding Gretal. We feel privileged to have her in our family, to continue the wonderful care and love she had her first six years with her first owner Brooke, who sadly passed away from cancer last year, leaving Gretal an orphan and in the care of DRNA.
Gretal has filled our hearts with love and is like another child in our family. She is sweet, affectionate, and gentle. She is a tenacious watchdog with a bark as big as a german shepherd. But she has all the housemanners of a delicate southern belle. She loves to go for walks, sleep in the 'big bed', burrow under blankets, and she loves treats! She always has big welcome-homes for us upon returning from an errand, and can't wait to meet our children at the bus stop each day. Gretal is a blessing from above.... Thank you DRNA for finding this wonderful little dog for us, for understanding how well she fits into our family, and how much we love her already. |

| Hi! My name is Gunnar and I’m a spoiled-rotten Doxie.
However, the truth is I wasn’t always this way. I came from a puppy-mill where I was kept in a tiny cage and given very little to eat. Then to make matters worse, they decided no one would want a puppy like me and dropped me off at an "unfriendly" shelter. I was one sad puppy. But, just when I was about to give up hope, some kind person brought me to the Dachshund Rescue of North America. They knew of a Doxie-loving family in Indiana who had room in their hearts and home for another little doggie. What happened next was kind-of a blur. I seem to remember a trip to the vet, a little surgery, getting some vaccinations and a trip in the car that lasted a couple hours. Next thing I knew, I was in a new home with some new furry faces. Going to live with my new pack was pretty scary at first. Fortunately for me, I’ve had lots of help adjusting thanks to my big sisters. Cocoa is the “alpha dog” who keeps me in line and shows me where to go. And big sister Hattie mothers me just like I was her very own. Since living with my new family, I’ve learned to pottie outside, to run and play, take walks, go camping, go for rides and eat ice-cream. At first I was kind of scared of my new pack-leaders. But now we’re best buddies because I know they love me and will continue to give me the best of care. Yep! I’m a lucky, lucky boy. |

Dear DRNA,I am writing to tell you that I love my new home! They adopted me because their previous Dachshund passed away. They have 4 cats that I like to chase and play with. They have a nice backyard that I like to run around and play fetch in. My Dad usually takes me out. I always go on walks with Mom and Jenna. When my family and I go to Grandma's house, My aunts dog Buffy is usually there. We love to play with each other and I always lick her snout. The members of my Family is Mom, Dad, and My sister and my brother, Jenna and Sean. We live in Pawcatuck, CT. We took a trip to Cape Cod for the Cape Cod Doxie day, where I won the award for Best Kisser and went to Maine to see my other Grandparents. I have a little bag with a dog on it to put some of my toys and food in when I go places. I like to eat EVERYTHING besides my dog food, so they have to mix it up with something healthy, like shredded cheese or carrots. I do like vegetables, especially frozen green beans. I hate to swim, but maybe I would like it in a baby pool. My cousin just had a baby a few months ago and I love him very much. When Jenna babysits him, I lick his ears. I want to say Thank you to my foster Mom Lois for taking care of me and trying to find me a home. Bye! Gunner (with a little help from Jenna) |

| Gwinnie |
Hi, I was Winnie when I lived in Kentucky with my great foster mom, Londa, but now in Oregon, I'm Gwinnie. My family knows other Winnies so it would be confusing. You can see me on the main page of the DRNA site with Cooper, Missy, Sandy and Billy B. I had a back injury and my first family couldn't take care of me. DRNA got me my surgery in May, 2005, and I lived for a long time with Londa. It was hard for her to let me go, but in April of 2006, a DRNA friend took me on the plane with her to Oregon. I was her carry-on luggage in a comfortable soft crate. Thank you, Carol, for taking good care of me on the long trip. I was a very good girl. When we arrived, she opened the top to let me peek out so my new mom, Kathleen, would be able to find us. I was the Easter Dog, but I'm glad they didn't ask me to wear those bunny ears!
When I lived with her, Londa took special care of me and did all kinds of things to help me get better. Before I got here, she made sure my new family would know all about me and the problems I've had. She wanted to be sure they knew about Dachshund behavior, and that I wouldn't need to find a new home again, but it turned out they have already had two other Doxies before me. My new housemates include Abby the Basset Hound who is eleven, and Nickie who looks like a little white Beagle and is about fifteen years old. They were rescued, too. We all get along fine together. I sure would like to help Abby eat her food, her bowl is so much bigger than mine, but she eats almost as fast as I do! We have places to sleep around the house and the other two don't mind if I use theirs sometimes. The first couple of days I lived here, I went to work with Kathleen in my crate. I was a very good girl, and everyone stopped in to meet me! The first person I met said, "Look at her! Can you believe she's smiling at me?" Of course I was. I do know how to make a good impression, if I choose to.
I have a fenced yard to play in, and I have my own little swimming pool that I don't have to share. Abby and Nickie don't like water very much. I just want everyone to know that I settled in quickly at my new home, and won't be going anywhere else. Everyone loves me here. What's not to love about a little red Doxie? I sit at the computer with Kathleen and we check the DRNA site often, hoping to see that lots of others have found their Forever Homes, as I have. Thank you, everybody, with love from Gwinnie The photos attached are 1. (Gwinnie 010) Gwinnie running around checking the perimeters of her new yard, letting the other neighborhood dogs know she had arrived. 2. (G June 06 003) is Gwinnie trying out the chairs on the back porch. 3. (G June 06 012) is Gwinnie wearing the lifejacket Londa gave her, relaxing in her own pool. |
