Daisy
DaisyDaisy and her littermate Max adopted me on June 28, 2003. Since they were seniors I knew their time with me could be limited. I was fortunate to have a little over 3 years with Daisy before she passed away August 29, 2006. She was sassy and sweet and is dearly missed by Max (he's been known to try to groom me now that Daisy's not available!) and me.

The morning after we lost Daisy, Max went into congestive heart failure--I say his heart broke when Daisy died. He is holding his own with medication but I realize he'll be rejoining Daisy in the near future. Until then I'm sure he'll continue to bring me joy and laughter every day. I hope the donation made in Daisy's memory helps bring another family together.

Doodles
DoodlesDoodles, the little man in a dachshund housing, has left the building. Katy got doodles when he was already 7 years old. His former owners were greedy non-caring former Texans who dumped him at the humane society because he peed on the carpet. With tutelage by Cecil, his older dachshund step-brother and adopted pal, he was quickly heading out the dog door to water the lawn rather than the carpet. Initially afraid of men, by the time I came into his life, he was welcoming. I started walking him, something Katy had stopped doing due to his age. He took to it and demanded to be treated in the same way as the big dog, though he preferred to go walking without the other dog. A couple of years ago he endured the indignity of having to put up with a cat, but eventually came to a 'don't bark, don't care' policy of detente. But he started slowing down in the last couple of years, first he stopped jumping down from the coach and the ottoman and eventually stopped jumping up there as well. And more recently, the walks had become shorter and shorter. Anyway that brings us up to today. After suffering thru his kidneys deterioration, Katy let him go to the big fire-plug in the sky. Long live doodles!

Dora
Dora was picked up with her sister, Clair, in Cobb County, Georgia. Dora was about 14 or 15 years old. She came to live in her foster home August 15, 2010. Dora had a mammary tumor, a skin allergy, and serious mouth infection. Dora scratched almost continuously because of her skin issue. After trying several medications, we seemed to resolve the skin problem. She had to have several of her teeth and part of her lip removed because of the infection. She has been on antibiotics almost continuously for infections. Even though test came back negative, we suspect she had cancer in her sinuses.

Dora was almost completely house trained only having two known accidents in 8 months. We carried her out each time she indicated she had to potty. After 4 months of carrying her out and back in we were able to get Dora to come up the doggie ramp and through the doggie door. I could never get her to go down the ramp.

Why would anyone not care for a dog in the condition Dora was in? Why would anyone just put a dog out that was this smart. With so many people wanting to adopt dogs and so many people willing to rescue dogs, Why? Oh how we would have loved to have Dora when she was younger.

Dora Mae Pleasants was laid to rest April 10, 2010. She is out of her pain now and gone to live with God. She finally has Someone that will take care of her forever and ever. She will know pain no more. We love you Miss Dora and will miss you dearly. You were one of my prettiest girls in the world.

Dreamer and other puppymill dogs
DreamerDreamer was a sweet soul we did not know very long. She was only a few weeks old when she died September 3, 2008 from a bacterial infection she contracted at a puppymill where she was born. On Saturday August 23, 2008 DRNA was involved in a raid of the puppymill where Dreamer lived. Working with several other groups and agencies, 1,000 dogs from Whispering Oaks Kennel in Parkersburg, WV were removed. Little Dreamer was one of these dogs, and she touched our lives, as did others such as Kasey and a newborn puppy that couldn't hold on anymore. They cross the Rainbow Bridge surrounded by love. Rest peacefully, little ones, your spirit lives on with the others...
