| Winston was picked up as a stray emaciated and covered in ticks by a rural Virginia Animal Control. When his 5 day stray hold was up and never claimed, they contacted rescue. He is a sweet little boy but a little timid with strangers, but once you hold him, he melts in your arms. He also has some separation anxiety and doesn’t like being alone as he doesn’t want to get lost again. These issues I think will improve with time with socialization and love as he realizes he is now in a safe place. When first picked up by Animal Control he weighted 5 lbs but with good puppy kibble he is now about 9 lbs and as an adult our guess is he will be 12 to 14 lbs, Our Vet aged him at 6 to 7 months as he still had some puppy teeth and his adult teeth have not fully come in. We have set his date of birth about 10/15/25 Winston will need a young playful well-adjusted dachshund in his future home so he can learn from them and have a buddy to play with. Winston loves to wrestle with the other younger dachshund in his foster home but can be rough on the old dogs. He is learning about toys and chewys and has learned to play fetch. Other than a wool dryer ball that unknowingly fell out of the dryer he has been good about not chewing on things he shouldn’t. But he is still very much a puppy and needs to be watched. Housetraining is very much a work in progress and will need continued work in his future home. Therefore, he needs a home with someone who can take him out frequently throughout the day. And as he is not good on a leash a secure fenced in yard is a must. Winston hates being crated….. we try to crate train all our foster dachshunds and he sleeps in one nightly. But even with other dachshunds nearby, night light and a warming disc he still nightly voices his objection for at least an hour at the top of his lungs, So it would be best if his future home allowed him to sleep with his person in the big bed. Winston is a happy loving puppy who is becoming more confident daily.
