Bella came to DRNA in Nov of 2018, yes 2018! She came from a hoarder situation in TX , they had over 120 dogs. Bella was one of the most scared and under socialized pups. Most of them were heartworm positive, Bella was one of them. She came to MD and settled into her foster home. She had a badly needed dental and spay. Once healed, we started her heartworm treatment. Bella's first round of treatments were done in Dec 2018. We used a fast kill so that we could attack this disease with all we had and get her healthy. As we waited to let her body heal, she continued to settle in with her foster home. She was learning to be part of a family, a normal pack with people who loved her. She took her time getting comfortable. She had to learn to potty outside, eat on a routine, sleep in the big bed. It was all new to her.
After 6 months, we heartworm tested Bella and she was still heartworm positive! Unfortunately, we had to make the decision to treat her again. Treatment is hard for any dog, treatment twice on a small dog is really hard. But she was a trooper as we repeated heartworm treatment in July 2019. We repeated her heartworm test at the end of Nov 2019 and she is STILL positive. We are going to wait until the end of March 2020 to test her again in hopes that she is negative. We have never had a pup treated twice and remain heartworm positive. In the meantime, she is being treated for an upper respiratory infection. Bella is really a warrior, she takes it all in stride with no complaints. This little 12lb girl has been through so much but still hanging in there! Her vet bill is over $1500. If you would like to donate towards her bill, click the link above. No amount is too small. Please send positive vibes and prayers her way, she can use it!
