Biography
Pixie is a petite 5 year old sweetheart who lived her whole life as a breeding dog on a puppy mill farm. She was kept in a wire cage 24/7. As a result, she is afraid of the world and needs to be socialized with love, patience, and lots of time. She enjoys being held, as her photo shows.........but if allowed off leash she would be next to impossible to catch even inside. She would be hiding behind furniture and running to the other side of the room. Once a person learns how to get her to come and allow herself to be picked up, she is fine. She is staying in an exercise pen right now. Pixie is learning to walk on a leash and working on her house training but that will be a work in progress for awhile.. She does ok with other small dogs and might learn more quickly from a calm canine friend. She has mastered 2 patio steps. She will need to be kept on leash even inside until she is comfortable coming to her new person.
DO NOT apply if you are not very experienced with dachshunds or puppy mill dogs because right now Pixie is special needs in the socialization department and needs a knowledgeable home with her new person home most of the time. She could be with a small quiet dog. No children or large dogs and she will need to be leashwalked even inside a securely fenced yard. Pixie will only be placed with someone who meets all those criteria and lives close enough to meet Pixie before a final decision is made. In time Pixie will blossom into a great companion.
Her adoption fee is $275.
Update 8/26---Pixie is making good progress in her socialization and housetraining. Her temperament is good and she enjoys people and other small dogs. She is still on leash but allowed freedom inside and in the fenced yard. She will be spayed this week.
Update 8/28--Pixie and Randee seem to be good friends. They came from the same mill and were probably a breeding pair. They would enjoy being adopted together, though it is not mandatory.
Update 10/4----Pixie needs to stay with her friend Randee. She really depends on him for her courage and would be unhappy without him.
