 Standard Vet Care

All DRNA dogs have received the following veterinary care.

  • Spayed or neutered
  • Rabies vaccine
  • DHPPC vaccine
  • Free of fleas, worms and other parasites
  • Heartworm test (occult) If they are found heartworm positive, they are treated as long as they are deemed healthy enough to undergo the treatment. If not, we examine what options are available or keep them in foster while improving their health status.
  • Dental cleaning, if needed.

We also try to identify, if not treat, any long-term conditions such as thyroid imbalance, allergies, diabetes, etc. so that you, as the adopter, know what you are committing to.

Vet care costs average out to $235 per dog, which you can see exceeds our placement fees, especially for senior dogs. Your donations help us make up the difference so we can provide dogs the care they desperately need and contributions are tax-deductible.

 Special Vet Care

DRNA also takes care of many medical issues that may have been the reason that the dogs were abandoned. DRNA has cared for heartworm treatments, numerous back surgeries, acupuncture series for a paralyzed doxie, bladder stone surgeries, parvo puppies, severe dental patients, exploratory nasal scope procedure, and several dogs that needed testing and/or treatment for Cushing's disease, thyroid imbalance, allergies, mange, skin infections, tumor removals, etc. Without the generosity of the dachshund community we could not provide these dogs with the urgent medical care they need. Many of the conditions listed above can be life threatening if left untreated. If discovered in a kill shelter, they are generally an immediate death sentence. Our fund raising team works hard to keep DRNA financially sound. Surgeons won't wait while we conduct a fundraiser to cover the $1,200-$2,500 that a back surgery can cost. Please visit our Doxie Store and see what kind of goodies you simply must have that will help a needy pupper in the process. We promise to make the proceeds go a l-o-n-g way.

We welcome any donations,
big or small!
