Donate Heartworm Treatment
If
you are reading this, chances are you know the importance
of heartworm prevention with a simple monthly "treat"
for the dogs. Unfortunately, many of the dachshunds that come
into DRNA have been neglected, and have never received heartworm
preventive. Many people do not realize even their indoor pets
can get heartworms -- all it takes is one bite from a mosquito
that is carrying heartworm larvae!
This one mosquito bite can lead to serious issues for a dog.
First, the heartworms migrate through tissues and finally
settle into the dog's heart. The heartworms can grow to as
long as 14 inches and cause significant damage to the heart,
lungs and other vital organs. If left untreated, heartworm
disease can result in death.
Thankfully, treatments have come a long way, and while it
does have risks, the benefits far outweigh leaving heartworm
disease untreated. DRNA believes in treating all heartworm-infected
dachshunds when it is financially feasible. It is a 6-12 week
process where injections of immiticide are given to the dog
that slowly poisons the heartworms at different stages. It
is done over time like this so the dying worms do not clog
the heart or lungs as they die off. This treatment is efficient
and kills off all the heartworms, leaving the dog a great
chance at 100% recovery.
Remember, mosquitoes know no boundaries and heartworms are
present in all states. Heartworm preventative should be given
all year and not just in the summer months.
