Grooming
is necessary for all dogs. Although grooming for smooth coat
dachshunds is minimal, the other 2 coat varieties may require
additional grooming. Smooth coats will not develop mats but
they do need periodic grooming to keep their coats and skin
healthy. Grooming helps with shedding and encourages new growth.
Because dachshunds have long ears, they are especially susceptible
to fungus and bacterial infections and should be checked weekly.
Basic grooming for all varieties includes:
- Nail Clipping
- Ear Cleaning
- Removing excess hair in foot pads
- Bath
- Anal Glands
Longhair and wirehair will require additional brushing and
matt removal if you don't comb regularly. Some of our rescues
come in with their coats in horrible condition and need
the services of a professional groomer. Mats can be very
painful and will develop into sores if not cared for properly.
