Biography
Jax is a handsome, loving boy who came in as a stray to North Carolina shelter. Shortly after his arrival it was obvious he was in incredible pain. He was sent to an area vet where they determined Jax was suffering from a perineal hernia. This occurs when the muscles in the pelvic region, which can include the muscles controlling the bladder, prostate and rectum, weaken. It can cause swelling adjacent to the rectum on one or both sides coupled with lethargy, difficulty urinating, and the inability to have a bowel movement.
After coming into rescue and being referred to a specialist, it was determined that Jax' hernia was serious - his rectum makes an L shape which significantly restricts his bowel movements; which means the more he strains the more blocked it becomes. He is now on a low-residue diet including in preparation for a lengthy and expensive surgery.
UPDATE: Jax had his surgery on Friday, November 28. The surgery lasted 2 1/2 hours and surgeon felt it went well. He was returned to hospital for recheck on Monday, December 1. He has done so well. Surgeon was surprised that he was eliminating on his own already. He has a ravenous appetite and a spring in his step that was not there before. He still needs a little time to be sure that his surgery was a total success but he is well on the way.
