| We got a phone call from a small local shelter about a beautiful B&T male dachshund that they had caught in a live trap. Louie had failed his behavior assessment test and just didn't "act right". Dachshunds are notorious for behaving badly in shelters. In the shelter they can be all growls and teeth, get them into a home and they are all hugs and kisses...not with Louie, it didn't turn out that way. We quickly figured out that Louie is either (a) Feral or (b) genetically shy...probably a combination of both. After having him in foster for over 2 years here is what I can tell you. Louie is extremely selective about his male relationships but he loves women. Thus we tend to think that he would do best in a female household. The changes in Louie over the last 2 years are amazing and wonderful to see. The first time he saw a set of stairs he had no idea of how to get down. His method of going down stairs was not good. He backed all the way across the porch and took a flying leap down eight stairs and landed hard. Today he is very adept at going up and down the stair. Louie would shiver and shake if you approached him and tried to pet him. Today he loves a good petting and can be a little demanding about it. He loves to go for walks and rides well in the car. His preference is to sleep in the big bed with you but he's equally happy in his own bed. Louie has become very reliable at doing his "business" outside by using the doggie door. Louie needs a Dachshund Smart mother that's willing to help him continue to make progress His adoption fee is $275. |
