Biography

* Skye is now out of his cart and walking (and running)to see video go to his photo webpage linked below.

Skye was found dragging himself down the road by Animal Control in a small town in NC. Held as a stray and never claimed, this guy had little chance at the overcrowded shelter. Lucky for him, his happy disposition touched a shelter worker who set her mind to finding a rescue to take him. And that is how DRNA got involved. Skye had large infected sores on both his back legs from dragging them over the hard ground that has taken surgery and months to heal. But finally we are seeing results and his legs are healing well.

Skye is a young dog (2 to 4 yrs old) but had been down in back for too long by the time DRNA got him to be a surgery candidate. What happened to Skye we don’t know …was he hit by a car, kicked, or abused in some way? He is young, healthy and trim so it had to be some sort of trauma for him to be injured like this. We will never know, but he does have sensation in one rear leg for sure (maybe both) and can wag his tail… both good signs. He can stand for short periods of time and actually recently took 2 steps on his own. Skye also has pretty good bowel and bladder control, but still needs to wear a belly band in the house. Who knows, with time and therapy he may someday be able to walk on his own again.

Skye recently got his own customized cart with donations from the local Dachshund Meetup Group and DRNA. Let me tell you this guy can really move on wheels. He came in 2nd in the cart races after only a week in a borrowed cart at the MADP in Oct. Now in his new cart he is even faster and was even able to catch a mouse that some how got into his fosters home during the Nov Nor’easter.

So if you have a special place in your heart for Dachshunds on wheels then look no farther. Once you meet this guy and his wonderful upbeat personality you will fall in love.
