Biography
Tony the Tigger gets his name from the bouncing-- bouncing-- bouncing greeting he gives when we come home. He has a bubbly personality and lots of energy. But he knows how to sit and stay, is 100% HOUSETRAINED, and will lie patiently by my side while I work on whatever. He just wants to be with his person. He was a stray who was placed by the SPCA in a home with a child who tormented him. He put up with the teasing for a year, and finally snapped at someone who was holding him for the tormenting child to pet him. All he wanted was to go hide. For that he got taken back to the shelter and would have been destroyed had it not been for a doxie loving shelter employee who connected with him once his quarantine was finished and convinced her boss to let him go to rescue. She was so right, he is well worth a second chance. He gets along with other small dogs, and has been fine with our 8 and 13 yr old children, who are very respectful of our dogs. He should be placed in a home with no small children just to prevent any nervousness he might have around young children after his last experience. In order to allow a personal home visit, he will only be placed within 100 miles of central Delaware. Tony's adoption fee is $275.00, and he is sooo worth every penny!! Matter of fact, he's Grrrrrreat!
Update 6/10: Tony has been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and will need to be on thyroid replacement pills twice a day for life. He had some temperament issues which have resolved with the thyroid medication and are being attributed to his medical condition. He is going to be evaluated by a dog behaviorist just in case there are training approaches that still will need to be used with him. He needs an experienced doxie home.
Update 12/10: Tony's temperament has been very stable since he has been on the thyroxine. Not a single growl! He has been evaluated by a dog trainer who is certain he is not aggressive in any way. In August he had a back episode, from which he has completely recovered after 8 weeks of crate rest, medication. and acupuncture.
Tony waits patiently for his very own forever home.......hoping his very own family will come for him soon......
Update 06/16: Tony has been totally stable medically. He continues on his thyroid supplement and has had zero behavioral problems. He is happy here in his foster home, but he sure would love a real furever home of his own!
